English Translations of Vergil's Aeneid
We've all been there. It's late at night, and you're trying to remember whether Richard Stanyhurst's translation came before Alexander Strahan's, or vice versa. Or maybe you're packing for a vacation at the beach and want to grab a copy of the 1872 translation by Christopher Pearse Cranch before catching your flight. Fret no more. We've got you covered.
Listed below are all the English translations of Vergil's Aeneid from the first one in 1513 by Gavin Douglas to whatever is hottest off the press. If there is a copy to be had, whether online or in print, I have created a link for it, and in the instances where both exist, the print version link ends with -p, and the electronic version link ends with -e. Some translators published their versions in two volumes, hence two links ending with 1 or 2. Names highlighted in green indicate that I own a print copy. Names not highlighted are of those that I do not possess.
Be sure to bookmark this page, for as Vergil once wrote, "Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit." Aeneid I.203.

Oh, and if you happen to own a print translation that you can see I do not, please let me know. I may be interested in purchasing it from you.
What People Are Saying
How wonderful -- a great resource for having students evaluate different versions once they have good comprehension of a given passage. I'll be recommending to my Vergil tutorial students!
